San Francisco

San Francisco is located in the North of the State of California, United States of America.

It was founded on June 29, 1776 by Spanish colonists.

San Francisco with a population around 800.000 people is very famous for

  • Golden Gate Bridge
  • The Cable Cars
  • Alcatraz
  • Twin Peaks
  • Painted Ladies

San Francisco also became famous because of various Movies like "The Rock" or TV-Series such as "Twin Peaks" or "The Streets of San Francisco" for instance.

For me San Francisco was the second City after New York I visited in the United States. This City is very nice and very similar to many European Citys. But it also shows you the ugly side of the United States! Many homeless living on the street, many of them next to famous streets and stores. Besides that you need a lot of money for getting a good Hotel or a good meal. Nevertheless the people are very kind and willing to help if you are getting lost somewhere.

Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is made of steel.

Total length is 2,737.4 m (8,981 ft), about 2.7 km (1.7 mi ) Width 27.4 m (90 ft ) and a height  of about 227.4 m (746 ft) and the longest span is 1,280.2 m (4,200 ft).

As you can see at the pictures I took you need to be quite lucky to get a shot without fog. Besides that it is very crowded at the well known spots .

So if you every get the chance to see the Bridge take enough time and also be prepared for the could wind coming from the Pacific Ocean.

The cable car system of San Francisco is the world's last manually operated cable car system and started it´s operation in 1878.

At the beginning 23 lines operated in San Francisco. Today only 3 active lines remains

  • Powell-Mason line: 2.6 km (1.6 mi)

The Painted Ladies

"Painted ladies" is a term in American architecture used for Victorian and Edwardian houses and buildings painted in three or more colors that embellish or enhance their architectural details. The term was first used for San Francisco Victorian houses by writers Elizabeth Pomada and Michael Larsen in their 1978 book Painted Ladies - San Francisco's Resplendent Victorians.{Source: Wikipedia}

You can find them next to Alamo Square. And if you are there spend some time around Alamo Square to find much more such beautiful houses. For more pictures see my San Francisco Album at this page.

Lombard Street

Lombard Street is an east–west street in San Francisco, California that is famous for a steep, one-block section with eight hairpin turns. The street was named after Lombard Street in Philadelphia by San Francisco surveyor Jasper O'Farrell.

This street is really famous because people staying in line with their cars for even a hour to get their turn on driving the eight hairpin turns. And besides that hundreds of tourists (such us I am obviously) are standing somewhere next to the street for getting a nice shot or a selfie.
